After Tamil Nadu, Rahul targets Kerala to the chagrin of Marxists

After Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, RahulGandhi, the Congress party’s crown prince, is turning his attention to Kerala on Oct 7 in a bid to consolidate the gains made by Congress in the Left-ruled state in the May Lok Sabha election.
The AICC General Secretary will spend a day on his main visit interacting with party leaders and workers.
The visit assumed significance as Kerala will see by-elections from Ernakulam, Kannur and Alappuzha to the assembly on Nov 7. The Congress hopes to show a good performance and thus strike another blow to the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
These three seats fell vacant following the election of K V Thomas, K C Venugopal and K Sudhakaran to Lok Sabha. So stakes for the Congress are high. The outcome sets the stage for local body elections next year and the assembly polls in early 2011.
On its part, the LDF is keen to prove a point or two by wresting at least one of the three seats held by Congress.
Like in other states he had visited, here in Kerala also, Rahul’s focus will be the youth. His pep talk to the leaders and cadres will be to go all out to attract youth to the Congress-fold. He will also review the membership drive of Youth Congress and the elections to the party's student wing. He will visit three major campuses in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode as to mingle with students ahead of KSU organizational polls.
Local Congress leaders are pinning hopes on Rahul to rejuvenate the faction ridden party. By paying greater attention to youth, women and marginalized sections, they expect him to help in further expanding the social base of the party.
Rahul last month visited Tamil Nadu to rejuvenate the Congress which has been out of power in the state since 1967 and has made either of the Dravidian parties -- AIADMK or DMK its crutch. He visited Uttar Pradesh without informing the state police as required under security drill and spent two days living amidst Dalits making chief minister Mayawati to see red every where.
