Moolathara dam breaches

PALAKKAD: The right bank of the Moolathara dam (regulator-cum-bridge) in Palakkad district was breached following the release of water from the Aliyar dam by Tamil Nadu.

However, no casualties have been reported following the incident which occurred around 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Some houses and paddy fields on the banks of the Bharathapuzha in Yakkara and the adjacent places were flooded. As the north-east monsoon has been continuously lashing Tamil Nadu for the past few days, the Aliyar dam became full. Hence, the Tamil Nadu authorities decided to release the water into the Chitturpuzha.

The bushes, weeds and tree trunks that blocked the shutters of the dam had been restricting the flow of water.

As a result, portions of the mud bank on the right side of the Moolathara dam was washed away.

The water that breached the mud bank is now flowing into the Chitturpuzha. Consequently, the Bharathapuzha is also full to the brim. The Water Resources Department of Tamil Nadu had initiated steps to release the water from the Aliyar dam only on Saturday night after the dam became full, following the onslaught of the northeast monsoon.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu authorities have informed that they would be releasing only 14,000 cusecs of water. However, by Sunday morning, the quantity of water increased substantially.

Later, after an intimation from Kerala, Tamil Nadu restricted the flow of water from the Aliyar dam.

However, if the monsoon continues unabated, Tamil Nadu might release more water, inundating the low-lying areas and spelling danger to the Moolathara regulator- cum-bridge.

Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran, Electricity Minister A K Balan, District Collector James and Superintendent of Police Vijay Sakhare visited the site and evaluated the situation. A K Balan said that it was due to the release of a large quantity of water by Tamil Nadu, without warning, that resulted in the breach of the dam.

The Moolathara dam was constructed as part of the Chitturpuzha Irrigation Project.
