Kanimozhi echoes DMK’s resident status demand for Lankan Tamils in Rajya Sabha

Urging the Centre not to treat a part Lankan Tamils who came as refugees as foreign nationals, Ms. Kanimozhi said those Lankan Tamils who came in the aftermath of 1983 riots and until 1993 were considered refugees, but those who came after 1993 are treated like foreign nationals, according to a 1996 order of the Centre (G.O 370).
Subjecting the Sri Lankan Tamil nationals to G.O 370 would lead to unnecessary legal hurdles for them. The inflow of Lankan Tamil refugees was continuous one. Relaxation of rules will greatly benefit them, the DMK MP told the Rajya Sabha.
She said there are 73,074 Lankan Tamil refugees in 114 refugee camps across the state. “32,240 Lankan Tamil refugees live on their own outside the camps in the state,” she added.
Ms Kanimozhi pointed out that the Tamil Nadu government has been helping the refugees with food, clothes, shelter and financial aid with the help of the Centre.
