NATO troops continue operation against Taliban
NATO and Afghan troops are continuing a joint operation in southern Helmand province and eastern Nuristan in a bid to suppress a Taliban force that killed eight US soldiers at the weekend.It was the coalition's heaviest toll in a single incident in Afghanistan for more than a year.
The Afghan defence ministry says 10 Afghan soldiers have been killed and more than 100 Taliban killed and wounded in the counter attack.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says the West's failure to deploy enough force has allowed the Taliban to gain strength.
"The reality is that because of our inability and the inability frankly of our allies to put enough troops into Afghanistan, the Taliban do have the momentum right now, it seems," he said.
The operation coincides with President Barack Obama considering a request from the US commander in the war zone for more troops.
