Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka has told several Sri Lankans who had attended a special ceremony held at the Buddhist temple in Washington, USA on Sunday (25) that he was ready to continue to serve the country in the manner in which he served the nation as a military officer for decades even after retiring from the force. Ven. Maharagama Dharmasiri Thero of the Washington temple had organized a ceremony to invoke blessings on the General and the war heroes. However, Sri Lankan ambassador to the US in Washington, Jaliya Wickremasuirya were notable absentees at the event. Deputy ambassador Tissa Wijeratne and several other embassy officials had attended the ceremony. The General had told the gathering, “A lot of people are speaking about the military victory. About 5,000 soldiers sacrificed their lives during the final phase of the war. If not for their supreme sacrifice we, would not have been able to defeat the LTTE. Therefore, the first people to receive the credit of the military victory should be these soldiers who laid down their lives.” “… Terrorism won’t end simply by killing Prabhakaran. What we need is to change the social system that could bring about another Prabhakaran. Therefore, there is no point in holding celebrations about Prabhakaran’s death. The war is over now. There is no need to further detain the Tamil civilians. By forcibly detaining Tamil civilians in this manner could pave the way for the creating of another Prabhakaran in future.
