The decision had been arrived at due to the fear that the common candidate put forward by the United National Alliance may not be able to muster the votes of the Tamil community.

Discussions on putting forward a Tamil speaking candidate at the next Presidential election have already been held with leaders of the alliance of minority parties.


Sources further said UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was scheduled to meet with several Tamil party leaders today (21) evening to discuss the matter further.
