Sri Lanka concerned over attack on Toronto ‘Maha Viharaya’

The Sri Lankan government’s concerns over the attack on the Toronto ‘Maha Viharaya’ have been conveyed by the High Commission in Ottawa to Candian officials.

In the early hours of Friday, an attempt had been made by an unidentified person or persons to burn down the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple at 4608 Kingston Road, Scarborought, known as the Toronto ‘Maha Viharaya’.

On seeing smoke from the Temple, a TTC Bus Operator had informed the Fire Department. No one has been injured. Extensive damages had been caused to the temple. This is the second attempt made to set ablaze the temple this year, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

At a meeting with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFA&IT), the High Commission conveyed the concerns of the Government of Sri Lanka to the Canadian Officials on the incident. The DFA&IT assured that precautionary measures will be taken to protect Sri Lankan interests in Canada, the statement noted.
