Sources from the Election Commissioner’s Department said an application has been made to the Elections Commissioner seeking approval to register a new political party by several opposition political activists with the aim of putting forward General Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate at the next Presidential election.

The newly formed United National Alliance led by the UNP is to also register the Alliance as a new political party with the Election Commissioner’s Department shortly.

However, sources from temple Trees said a team of the President’s lawyers are looking at how to prevent new political parties from being registered according to the amendment proposed to parliament by Minister Dinesh
