Presidential Secretariat orders Election Commissioner not to register UNF

Sources from the Election Commissioner’s Department said a senior official from the Presidential Secretariat had called on the Elections Commissioner not to register the newly formed United National Front (UNF) initiated by the UNP.

The Presidential lawyers have observed that no new political parties could be registered at the Elections Department until the amendments to the electoral system proposed by Minister Dinesh Gunawardena are implemented through a new electoral system.

If the order is implemented following a Presidential directive, the UNF and all other parties planning on being registered as political parties in the country would be unable to receive registration.
