Ranil would not contest at next Presidential election Decision to field common candidate officially announced
The leadership of the United National Front (UNF) has decided not to field a candidate from the party at the next Presidential election and to instead field a common candidate from the opposition with the objective of abolishing the Executive Presidency, a senior UNP parliamentarian told Lanka News Web.
The decision was arrived at a special meeting held between the leaders of the UNF yesterday (4) afternoon. The parliamentarian said the decisions arrived at the meeting are to be communicated to leaders of other political parties including the JVP and a statement was made about the UNF stance at a media briefing today (5).
