The President’s eldest son Namal Rajapaksa had told several officials from his Tharunyata Hetak movement that uncles Basil and Gotabhaya were ruining his father’s and his political future, reliable sources said.

Namal had said that it was uncle Basil who was responsible for getting the JVP out of the government and receive the support Wimal Weerawansa after his defection from the JVP and that uncle Gotabhaya was responsible for the rift with General Sarath Fonseka. He had further said that these incidents have resulted in placing the government in an unstable position.

Namal had then told his friends that neither his father nor mother were involved in any of the stories that were circulating around the country about corruption, commissions and forcible


acquisition of public property. He had blamed the foolish acts of his uncles for being the root cause behind all those stories.

Namal had requested his friends to inform him of any ideas to rebuild the soured relationship between his father and the JVP and to pledge their fullest support to ensure his father’s victory at the Presidential election.
