Need to find permanent solution for Lankan Tamils: Krishna

While saying that there was a need to find a “permanent solution” to the problems faced by Sri Lankan Tamils, Minister for External Affairs S M Krishna on Monday also underlined that the Indian government has always taken up the issue of human rights with that country through diplomatic channels.

“We have always conveyed to the Sri Lankan government that it should, through a political process, settle the issue of Tamil minorities... we are not stopping at the 13th Amendment. We want the

Sri Lankan Government to go beyond the 13th Amendment. The political dialogue, which the Government of India expects Sri Lanka to involve itself, would be to find a permanent solution to this problem,” Krishna told the Rajya Sabha.

Saying that much more needed to be done to address the grievances of the 100,000 Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Sri Lanka, Krishna also reminded that the island nation was a friendly country.
